WSH Troubleshooting

Issues Opening WSH Files

Microsoft Notepad Disappeared

You attempt to load your WSH file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The WSH File Extension". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Notepad is not installed on %%os%%. The typical path of opening your WSH with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your WSH, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Microsoft Notepad is Out-of-Date

It is possible that your version of Microsoft Notepad isn't able to open your Windows Script Host Settings File file due to incompatibility. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Notepad if you don't have the right version. This problem is predominately due to having a Windows Script Host Settings File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Notepad than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: If you right-click on your WSH file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening WSH files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Additional WSH Opening Issues

Although you might already have Microsoft Notepad or another WSH-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Windows Script Host Settings File files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading WSH files, other external issues might be to blame. These issues include:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for WSH are wrong
  • The WSH file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Microsoft Notepad or another WSH application experienced a flawed installation
  • Your WSH can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Your WSH has adversely impacted by malware
  • WSH-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Windows Script Host Settings File files
