Understanding WTL Issues
Common Problems Opening WTL Files
Missing Windows Hardware Certification Kit
When you double-click your WTL file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that Windows Hardware Certification Kit is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your WTL with Windows Hardware Certification Kit, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When another WTL application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Windows Hardware Certification Kit is Out-of-Date
It is possible that your version of Windows Hardware Certification Kit isn't able to open your Windows Test Technologies Logger Results file due to incompatibility. Download the latest Windows Hardware Certification Kit version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your Windows Test Technologies Logger Results file was created by a newer Windows Hardware Certification Kit than what you have installed.
Tip: Right-clicking on your WTL, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: Not having the right Windows Hardware Certification Kit version on your computer can cause problems opening WTL files.
Additional WTL Opening Issues
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Windows Hardware Certification Kit will resolve your issue. If you are continuing to have errors with loading WTL files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Windows Registry WTL file paths that are incorrect
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry WTL description
- Windows Hardware Certification Kit or another WTL application experienced a flawed installation
- WTL file corruption
- Your WTL has adversely impacted by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your WTL file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Windows Test Technologies Logger Results file
