Understanding XDR Issues

Typical XDR Opening Challenges

Microsoft Notepad Disappeared

You attempt to load your XDR file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The XDR File Extension". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Notepad for %%os%% installed. Your operating system cannot associate your XDR with Microsoft Notepad, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Notepad installed, and you know of another program to open your XDR file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Obsolete Version of Microsoft Notepad

Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Notepad installed that's incompatible with your XML-Data Reduced File type. Download the latest Microsoft Notepad version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Your XML-Data Reduced File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Notepad than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Right-clicking on your XDR, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening XDR files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

More Causes of Problems Opening XDRs

You can still experience errors opening XDR files even with the latest version of Microsoft Notepad installed on your PC. Other XDR opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • XDR file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry XDR description
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the XDR format
  • Your XDR can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your XDR
  • Device drivers for XDR-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the XML-Data Reduced File format
