Sources of XEL Problems
Common Problems Opening XEL Files
Microsoft Expression Studio Disappeared
When trying to open your XEL file, you get the error "Can't Open XEL File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Expression Studio isn't installed on your PC. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the XEL file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your XEL, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Wrong Version of Microsoft Expression Studio is Installed
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Expression Studio won't support your Expression Encoder Live Encoding File file. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Expression Studio (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This issue mainly occurs when your Expression Encoder Live Encoding File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Expression Studio than you have on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the XEL file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening XEL files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other Causes of XEL File Opening Problems
You can still experience errors opening XEL files even with the latest version of Microsoft Expression Studio installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading XEL files, other external issues might be to blame. These issues include:
- Invalid XEL file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Unintentional removal of the description of the XEL file inside the Windows Registry
- Microsoft Expression Studio or another XEL application experienced a flawed installation
- Your XEL can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- The XEL is infected with a virus
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your XEL file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Expression Encoder Live Encoding File files
