Sources of XEX Problems
Frequent XEX Opening Issues
Microsoft XBOX is Not Installed
You attempt to load your XEX file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The XEX File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft XBOX missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your XEX because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens XEX files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Incorrect Microsoft XBOX Version
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Xbox 360 Executable File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft XBOX installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is predominately due to having a Xbox 360 Executable File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft XBOX than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your XEX file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening XEX files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft XBOX installed.
Other Causes of XEX File Opening Problems
Assuming you have the right Microsoft XBOX version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening XEX files. If you are still having problems opening XEX files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These issues include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for XEX are wrong
- Unintentional removal of the description of the XEX file inside the Windows Registry
- Corrupt install of Microsoft XBOX or other XEX-related program
- Your XEX can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Malware-tainted XEX file can't be opened
- Drivers associated with XEX software need to be updated
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Xbox 360 Executable File format
