Common Problems Opening XGS Files

Microsoft XACT is Not Installed

Double-clicking your XGS file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open XGS File". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft XACT installed for %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: Another XGS-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Microsoft XACT is Out-of-Date

Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft XACT won't support your XACT Global Settings File file. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft XACT. Most of the time your XACT Global Settings File file was created by a newer Microsoft XACT than what you have installed.

Tip: Investigate your XGS file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Regardless, most of the XGS file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft XACT installed.
