XIE File Complications

Issues Opening XIE Files

X Window System Not Present

When trying to open your XIE file, you get the error "Can't Open XIE File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have X Window System for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: When another XIE application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Obsolete Version of X Window System

It is possible that your version of X Window System isn't able to open your X Image Extension file due to incompatibility. Visit the X.Org Foundation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of X Window System. Your X Image Extension file was probably created by a newer release of X Window System than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Investigate your XIE file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Regardless, most of the XIE file opening problems relate to not having the right version of X Window System installed.

Other Causes of XIE File Opening Problems

Even with the correct version of X Window System installed, you can still experience difficulties opening XIEs. If you are continuing to have errors with loading XIE files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

• XIE file references in the Windows Registry are broken
• Deletion of the XIE file description from the Registry by mistake
• X Window System or another XIE application experienced a flawed installation
• File corruption affecting your XIE file
• XIE file integrity has been compromised by malware
• Hardware related to XIEs has device driver corruption
• Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the X Image Extension file
