XIP Troubleshooting

Typical XIP Opening Challenges

Apple Archive Utility Removed

If you attempt to load your XIP file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open XIP Files". Usually, this is because you do not have Apple Archive Utility for %%os%% installed. The typical path of opening your XIP with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens XIP files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Wrong Version of Apple Archive Utility is Installed

Sometimes your installed version of Apple Archive Utility won't support your MacOS Signed Archive file. If you've got the wrong version of Apple Archive Utility installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your MacOS Signed Archive file was created by a different (newer) version of Apple Archive Utility than what's installed.

Tip: Right-clicking on your XIP, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: Not having the right Apple Archive Utility version on your computer can cause problems opening XIP files.

Associated Difficulties Loading XIP Files

Although you might already have Apple Archive Utility or another XIP-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening MacOS Signed Archive files. Other XIP opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for XIP
  • The XIP file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Defective install of a XIP program, such as Apple Archive Utility
  • File corruption affecting your XIP file
  • Malware-tainted XIP file can't be opened
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your XIP file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the MacOS Signed Archive format
