Troubleshoot XMB Files
Typical XMB Opening Challenges
Microsoft Age of Empires Isn't There
You attempt to load your XMB file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The XMB File Extension". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Age of Empires for %%os%% installed. The typical path of opening your XMB with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When another XMB application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Microsoft Age of Empires Requires Update
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Age of Empires won't support your Age Of Empires Game Data File file. Visit the Ensemble Studios website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Age of Empires. Your Age Of Empires Game Data File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Age of Empires than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: If you right-click on your XMB file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening XMB files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Age of Empires installed on your computer.

Errors opening Age Of Empires Game Data File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Age of Empires software installed on your computer. If you're still experiencing problems opening XMB files, there could be other computer problems. These issues include:
