Sources of XRM-MS Problems
Troubles Opening XRM-MS Files
Microsoft Windows Isn't There
When you double-click your XRM-MS file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Windows for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the XRM-MS file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your XRM-MS, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Microsoft Windows Requires Update
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Windows installed that's incompatible with your Microsoft Security Certificate type. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Windows installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Microsoft Security Certificate file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Windows than what's installed.
Tip: Investigate your XRM-MS file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening XRM-MS files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other XRM-MS File Issues
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Windows installed, you can still experience difficulties opening XRM-MSs. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening XRM-MSs. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Invalid XRM-MS file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry XRM-MS description
- Invalid installation of a XRM-MS-associated program (eg. Microsoft Windows)
- The XRM-MS itself is corrupted
- The XRM-MS is infected with a virus
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your XRM-MS file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Microsoft Security Certificate format
