Troubleshooting Problems Opening XSN Files
Typical XSN Opening Challenges
Microsoft InfoPath is Not Installed
When you double-click your XSN file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft InfoPath for %%os%% installed. The OS won't know what to do with your XSN file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your XSN file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Microsoft InfoPath is Out-of-Date
In other instances, your InfoPath Form Template File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft InfoPath. Installing the latest version of Microsoft InfoPath from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. Your InfoPath Form Template File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft InfoPath than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of XSN file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening XSN files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional XSN Opening Issues
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft InfoPath will resolve your issue. If you're still experiencing problems opening XSN files, there could be other computer problems. Issues that aren't software-related:
- File references in the Windows Registry for XSN are wrong
- Accidental deletion of the description of the XSN file in the Windows registry
- Defective install of a XSN program, such as Microsoft InfoPath
- Something has caused file corruption of your XSN
- XSN file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Hardware related to XSNs has device driver corruption
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your InfoPath Form Template File file successfully
