Understanding XSS Issues

Common Problems Opening XSS Files

Missing Microsoft Visual Studio

When trying to open your XSS file, you get the error "Can't Open XSS File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Visual Studio for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: When another XSS application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Outdated Microsoft Visual Studio

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a XML Style Sheet file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Download the latest Microsoft Visual Studio version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your XML Style Sheet file was created by a newer Microsoft Visual Studio than what you have installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of XSS file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Regardless, most of the XSS file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening XSSs

Although you might already have Microsoft Visual Studio or another XSS-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening XML Style Sheet files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening XSSs. Problems unrelated to software:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for XSS are wrong
  • Corruption of the XSS file description inside the Registry
  • Partial installation of Microsoft Visual Studio that did not fully complete
  • XSS file corruption
  • XSS file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • Hardware associated with XSS has outdated drivers
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open XML Style Sheet files
