Understanding XTP2 Issues
Frequent XTP2 Opening Issues
Microsoft InfoPath is Not Installed
When you double-click your XTP2 file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft InfoPath missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your XTP2 because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: When another XTP2 application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Wrong Version of Microsoft InfoPath is Installed
It is possible that your version of Microsoft InfoPath isn't able to open your Microsoft InfoPath Template file due to incompatibility. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft InfoPath (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Microsoft InfoPath Template file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft InfoPath than what's installed.
Tip: Investigate your XTP2 file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Conclusion: The majority of XTP2 file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft InfoPath version installed.
Additional XTP2 Opening Issues
You can still experience errors opening XTP2 files even with the latest version of Microsoft InfoPath installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening XTP2s. Other contributing causes:
- XTP2 file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- The XTP2 file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a XTP2-associated program (eg. Microsoft InfoPath)
- The XTP2 itself is corrupted
- The XTP2 is infected with a virus
- XTP2-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Microsoft InfoPath Template format
