Understanding 004 Issues

Frequent 004 Opening Issues

7-Zip Removed

You attempt to load your 004 file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The 004 File Extension". Usually, this is because you do not have 7-Zip for %%os%% installed. You won't be able to double-click to open your 004 because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your 004 file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Outdated 7-Zip

Your Compressed File From A Multi-volume Archive (part 4) file is incompatible with 7-Zip because you might have the wrong version installed. You will need to download a newer version of 7-Zip if you don't have the right version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Right-clicking on your 004, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening 004 files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Other 004 File Opening Causes

Assuming you have the right 7-Zip version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening 004 files. If you are still having problems opening 004 files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Additional factors include:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for 004
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the 004 file in the Windows registry
  • Defective install of a 004 program, such as 7-Zip
  • File corruption affecting your 004 file
  • Your 004 has adversely impacted by malware
  • Drivers associated with 004 software need to be updated
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Compressed File From A Multi-volume Archive (part 4) file successfully
