64K Troubleshooting
Issues Opening 64K Files
VICE Removed
When you double-click your 64K file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have VICE installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your 64K file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have VICE installed, and you know of another program to open your 64K file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of VICE is Installed
It is possible that your version of VICE isn't able to open your C64 PC64 Emulator File file due to incompatibility. You will need to download a newer version of VICE if you don't have the right version. This problem is predominately due to having a C64 PC64 Emulator File file version that was created by a newer version of VICE than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Right-clicking on your 64K, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: Not having the right VICE version on your computer can cause problems opening 64K files.
More Causes of Problems Opening 64Ks
Even with the correct version of VICE installed, you can still experience difficulties opening 64Ks. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening 64Ks. These issues include:
- Invalid 64K file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Deletion of the 64K file description from the Registry by mistake
- Defective install of a 64K program, such as VICE
- Your 64K can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Your 64K has adversely impacted by malware
- Drivers associated with 64K software need to be updated
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the C64 PC64 Emulator File format
