Troubleshooting Problems Opening AMF Files
Issues Opening AMF Files
Autodesk Meshmixer Disappeared
When trying to open your AMF file, you get the error "Can't Open AMF File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Autodesk Meshmixer for %%os%% installed on your computer. You won't be able to double-click to open your AMF because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: When another AMF application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Autodesk Meshmixer Requires Update
Your Additive Manufacturing File file is incompatible with Autodesk Meshmixer because you might have the wrong version installed. Installing the latest version of Autodesk Meshmixer from Autodesk, Inc. is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your Additive Manufacturing File file was created by a newer version of Autodesk Meshmixer than you have on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of AMF file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Conclusion: The majority of AMF file opening issues are due to not having the correct Autodesk Meshmixer version installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading AMF Files
You can still experience errors opening AMF files even with the latest version of Autodesk Meshmixer installed on your PC. Other AMF opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Windows Registry AMF file paths that are incorrect
- Accidental deletion of the description of the AMF file in the Windows registry
- Autodesk Meshmixer or another AMF application experienced a flawed installation
- Something has caused file corruption of your AMF
- The AMF is infected with a virus
- AMF-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Additive Manufacturing File file successfully
