Troubleshoot CHORD Files

Frequent CHORD Opening Issues

Notepad++ Disappeared

You attempt to load your CHORD file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The CHORD File Extension". Usually, this is because you do not have Notepad++ for %%os%% installed. The typical path of opening your CHORD with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your CHORD, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Notepad++ Requires Update

It is possible that your version of Notepad++ isn't able to open your Song Chords File file due to incompatibility. Download the latest Notepad++ version from the Don Ho website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of CHORD file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening CHORD files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Other CHORD File Issues

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Notepad++ will resolve your issue. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening CHORDs. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • CHORD file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry CHORD description
  • Partial installation of Notepad++ that did not fully complete
  • File corruption affecting your CHORD file
  • Malware-tainted CHORD file can't be opened
  • Device drivers for CHORD-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Song Chords File file
