Troubleshoot DEI Files

Troubles Opening DEI Files

Missing Altium Designer

Double-clicking your DEI file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open DEI File". Usually, this is because you do not have Altium Designer for %%os%% installed. Your operating system cannot associate your DEI with Altium Designer, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your DEI file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Altium Designer is Out-of-Date

Sometimes your installed version of Altium Designer won't support your Gerber Design Engineered Interface file. You will need to download a newer version of Altium Designer if you don't have the right version. This issue mainly occurs when your Gerber Design Engineered Interface file was created by a newer version of Altium Designer than you have on your PC.

Tip: If you right-click on your DEI file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Conclusion: The majority of DEI file opening issues are due to not having the correct Altium Designer version installed.

Other DEI File Issues

You can still experience errors opening DEI files even with the latest version of Altium Designer installed on your PC. Other DEI opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These issues include:

  • DEI file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry DEI description
  • Defective install of a DEI program, such as Altium Designer
  • Your DEI file is corrupted (issues with your Gerber Design Engineered Interface file itself)
  • Your DEI has adversely impacted by malware
  • DEI-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Gerber Design Engineered Interface file successfully
