DSM File Complications
Frequent DSM Opening Issues
Missing ModPlug Player
When trying to open your DSM file, you get the error "Can't Open DSM File Type". Customarily, this means that ModPlug Player is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your DSM file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your DSM file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
ModPlug Player Requires Update
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of ModPlug Player installed that's incompatible with your Digital Sound Module type. You will need to download a newer version of ModPlug Player if you don't have the right version. This problem is predominately due to having a Digital Sound Module file version that was created by a newer version of ModPlug Player than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of DSM file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening DSM files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other DSM File Opening Causes
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of ModPlug Player will resolve your issue. Other DSM opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- File references in the Windows Registry for DSM are wrong
- The DSM file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a DSM-associated program (eg. ModPlug Player)
- The DSM itself is corrupted
- The DSM is infected with a virus
- Hardware related to DSMs has device driver corruption
- Windows cannot load your Digital Sound Module file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
