DTX Troubleshooting

Issues Opening DTX Files

MiKTeX Disappeared

If you attempt to load your DTX file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open DTX Files". When this happens, it is commonly due to MiKTeX missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your DTX with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your DTX file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Obsolete Version of MiKTeX

Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of MiKTeX installed that's incompatible with your Documented LaTeX File type. If you've got the wrong version of MiKTeX installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Most of the time your Documented LaTeX File file was created by a newer MiKTeX than what you have installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of DTX file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Conclusion: The majority of DTX file opening issues are due to not having the correct MiKTeX version installed.

Other Causes of DTX File Opening Problems

Errors opening Documented LaTeX File files can still occur even with the latest MiKTeX software installed on your computer. If you are continuing to have errors with loading DTX files, other external issues might be to blame. Other contributing causes:

  • DTX file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Corruption of the DTX file description inside the Registry
  • Invalid installation of a DTX-associated program (eg. MiKTeX)
  • Something has caused file corruption of your DTX
  • Your DTX is infected with malware
  • Hardware related to DTXs has device driver corruption
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your Documented LaTeX File file
