Understanding EFG Issues
Common Problems Opening EFG Files
Gambit Isn't There
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open EFG Files" when trying to open your EFG. Customarily, this means that Gambit is not installed on %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your EFG, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Gambit Requires Update
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Gambit Extensive Game Format file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Visit the Open Source website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Gambit. This problem is predominately due to having a Gambit Extensive Game Format file version that was created by a newer version of Gambit than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Right-clicking on your EFG, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening EFG files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other Causes of EFG File Opening Problems
Although you might already have Gambit or another EFG-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Gambit Extensive Game Format files. If you are still having problems opening EFG files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Additional factors include:
- EFG file type Registry entries are wrong
- The EFG file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Partial installation of Gambit that did not fully complete
- Your EFG file is corrupted (issues with your Gambit Extensive Game Format file itself)
- Your EFG has adversely impacted by malware
- EFG-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Gambit Extensive Game Format file
