Understanding EK6 Issues
Issues Opening EK6 Files
PKHeX Not Present
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open EK6 Files" when trying to open your EK6. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have PKHeX for %%os%% installed on your computer. The typical path of opening your EK6 with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When another EK6 application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
PKHeX Requires Update
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of PKHeX installed that's incompatible with your Generation 6 Pokémon Save File type. If you've got the wrong version of PKHeX installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your Generation 6 Pokémon Save File file was created by a newer version of PKHeX than you have on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your EK6 file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Regardless, most of the EK6 file opening problems relate to not having the right version of PKHeX installed.
Other EK6 File Opening Causes
You can still experience errors opening EK6 files even with the latest version of PKHeX installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening EK6s. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- EK6 file type Registry entries are wrong
- Unintentional removal of the description of the EK6 file inside the Windows Registry
- Defective install of a EK6 program, such as PKHeX
- Your EK6 file is corrupted (issues with your Generation 6 Pokémon Save File file itself)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your EK6
- Hardware related to EK6s has device driver corruption
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Generation 6 Pokémon Save File file successfully
