ERB File Complications
Common Problems Opening ERB Files
Microsoft Notepad is Not Installed
You attempt to load your ERB file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The ERB File Extension". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Notepad is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your ERB file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Notepad installed, and you know of another program to open your ERB file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Microsoft Notepad is Out-of-Date
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Notepad isn't able to open your Ruby ERB Script file due to incompatibility. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Notepad from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. The primary cause of this problem is that your Ruby ERB Script file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Notepad than what's installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the ERB file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening ERB files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other Causes of ERB File Opening Problems
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Notepad will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening ERB files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These issues include:
- ERB file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Unintentional removal of the description of the ERB file inside the Windows Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the ERB format
- Something has caused file corruption of your ERB
- Your ERB is infected with malware
- Drivers associated with ERB software need to be updated
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Ruby ERB Script files
