Troubleshoot FAX Files

Frequent FAX Opening Issues

Now Up-to-Date (Now Contact) is Not Installed

When trying to open your FAX file, you get the error "Can't Open FAX File Type". Customarily, this means that Now Up-to-Date (Now Contact) is not installed on %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: Another FAX-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Incorrect Now Up-to-Date (Now Contact) Version

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Now Contact Fax Template file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Visit the Now Software website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Now Up-to-Date (Now Contact). Most of the time your Now Contact Fax Template file was created by a newer Now Up-to-Date (Now Contact) than what you have installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of FAX file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Conclusion: The majority of FAX file opening issues are due to not having the correct Now Up-to-Date (Now Contact) version installed.

Other FAX File Opening Causes

Assuming you have the right Now Up-to-Date (Now Contact) version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening FAX files. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening FAX files. These issues include:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for FAX
  • Corruption of the FAX file description inside the Registry
  • Corrupt install of Now Up-to-Date (Now Contact) or other FAX-related program
  • The FAX itself is corrupted
  • Your FAX is infected with malware
  • Device drivers for FAX-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Now Contact Fax Template files
