Troubleshoot G Files
Issues Opening G Files
Missing BRL-CAD
If you attempt to load your G file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open G Files". If so, it typically means that you don't have BRL-CAD installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your G file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens G files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Wrong Version of BRL-CAD is Installed
In other instances, your BRL-CAD Geometry File file version may not be supported by your version of BRL-CAD. You will need to download a newer version of BRL-CAD if you don't have the right version. Most of the time your BRL-CAD Geometry File file was created by a newer BRL-CAD than what you have installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the G file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening G files are due to having the wrong version of BRL-CAD installed.
Other Causes of G File Opening Problems
You can still experience errors opening G files even with the latest version of BRL-CAD installed on your PC. Other G opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Issues that aren't software-related:
- G file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Unintentional removal of the description of the G file inside the Windows Registry
- Defective install of a G program, such as BRL-CAD
- G file corruption
- The G is infected with a virus
- Hardware related to Gs has device driver corruption
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your BRL-CAD Geometry File file successfully
