Troubleshoot GEF Files
Issues Opening GEF Files
GEF plot is Not Installed
When trying to open your GEF file, you get the error "Can't Open GEF File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have GEF plot for %%os%% installed on your computer. You won't be able to double-click to open your GEF because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens GEF files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Wrong Version of GEF plot is Installed
In other instances, your Geotechnical Exchange Format File file version may not be supported by your version of GEF plot. Download the latest GEF plot version from the Open Source website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This issue mainly occurs when your Geotechnical Exchange Format File file was created by a newer version of GEF plot than you have on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your GEF file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Conclusion: The majority of GEF file opening issues are due to not having the correct GEF plot version installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading GEF Files
You can still experience errors opening GEF files even with the latest version of GEF plot installed on your PC.
