Troubleshooting Problems Opening GHOST Files

Troubles Opening GHOST Files

Wrye Bash Isn't There

Double-clicking your GHOST file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open GHOST File". Usually, this is because you do not have Wrye Bash for %%os%% installed. You won't be able to double-click to open your GHOST because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: When another GHOST application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Wrye Bash Requires Update

Sometimes your installed version of Wrye Bash won't support your Ghost Inactive Mode File file. Installing the latest version of Wrye Bash from Open Source is recommended. Your Ghost Inactive Mode File file was probably created by a newer release of Wrye Bash than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of GHOST file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Summary: Not having the right Wrye Bash version on your computer can cause problems opening GHOST files.

Other GHOST File Opening Causes

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Wrye Bash will resolve your issue. If you're still experiencing problems opening GHOST files, there could be other computer problems. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for GHOST
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the GHOST file inside the Windows Registry
  • Wrye Bash or another GHOST application experienced a flawed installation
  • File corruption affecting your GHOST file
  • Your GHOST is infected with malware
  • Drivers associated with GHOST software need to be updated
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Ghost Inactive Mode File file successfully
