GITMODULES Troubleshooting
Troubles Opening GITMODULES Files
Git Not Present
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open GITMODULES Files" when trying to open your GITMODULES. Customarily, this means that Git is not installed on %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your GITMODULES, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Incorrect Git Version
Sometimes your installed version of Git won't support your Git Module file. Visit the Open Source website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Git. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your GITMODULES file and clicking "Properties".
Regardless, most of the GITMODULES file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Git installed.
Additional GITMODULES Opening Issues
Errors opening Git Module files can still occur even with the latest Git software installed on your computer. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening GITMODULES files. Additional factors include:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for GITMODULES
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry GITMODULES description
- Invalid installation of a GITMODULES-associated program (eg. Git)
- Your GITMODULES can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Your GITMODULES is infected with malware
- Drivers associated with GITMODULES software need to be updated
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Git Module format
