GPL Troubleshooting
Common GPL Opening Problems
Missing Microsoft Notepad
If you attempt to load your GPL file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open GPL Files". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Notepad missing in %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: Another GPL-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Microsoft Notepad is Out-of-Date
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a GNU Public License Text File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Notepad (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Most of the time your GNU Public License Text File file was created by a newer Microsoft Notepad than what you have installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the GPL file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening GPL files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Notepad installed.
Additional GPL Opening Issues
Errors opening GNU Public License Text File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Notepad software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening GPLs. These issues include:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for GPL
- The GPL file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Corrupt install of Microsoft Notepad or other GPL-related program
- Your GPL can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Malware-tainted GPL file can't be opened
- Drivers associated with GPL software need to be updated
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the GNU Public License Text File format
