Troubleshooting Problems Opening HDI Files

Common Problems Opening HDI Files

Anex86 Not Present

When you double-click your HDI file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Anex86 for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your HDI file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Wrong Version of Anex86 is Installed

In other instances, your Hard Disk Image file version may not be supported by your version of Anex86. If you do not have the proper version Anex86 (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Hard Disk Image file was created by a different (newer) version of Anex86 than what's installed.

Tip: Investigate your HDI file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Regardless, most of the HDI file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Anex86 installed.

Other HDI File Issues

Errors opening Hard Disk Image files can still occur even with the latest Anex86 software installed on your computer. Other HDI opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Additional factors include:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for HDI
  • Deletion of the HDI file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the HDI format
  • Your HDI file is corrupted (issues with your Hard Disk Image file itself)
  • Your HDI has adversely impacted by malware
  • Hardware related to HDIs has device driver corruption
  • Windows cannot load your Hard Disk Image file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)

Poll: How many different computer files (eg. documents, videos, audio) do you typically view or edit on a daily basis?
