Understanding HEX Issues

Issues Opening HEX Files

Heaventools FlexHex Not Present

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open HEX Files" when trying to open your HEX. Customarily, this means that Heaventools FlexHex is not installed on %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your HEX, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Wrong Version of Heaventools FlexHex is Installed

In other instances, your Hexadecimal Source File file version may not be supported by your version of Heaventools FlexHex. Download the latest Heaventools FlexHex version from the Heaventools Software website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your Hexadecimal Source File file was created by a newer Heaventools FlexHex than what you have installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of HEX file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Conclusion: The majority of HEX file opening issues are due to not having the correct Heaventools FlexHex version installed.

Other HEX File Opening Causes

Errors opening Hexadecimal Source File files can still occur even with the latest Heaventools FlexHex software installed on your computer. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening HEX files. These issues include:

  • HEX file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry HEX description
  • Defective install of a HEX program, such as Heaventools FlexHex
  • HEX file corruption
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your HEX
  • Device drivers for HEX-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Hexadecimal Source File format
