Common HTMLZ Opening Problems

Calibre Not Present

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open HTMLZ Files" when trying to open your HTMLZ. When this happens, it is commonly due to Calibre missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your HTMLZ file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your HTMLZ, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Calibre is Out-of-Date

Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Calibre installed that's incompatible with your Zipped HTML Document Or E-book type. Download the latest Calibre version from the Open Source website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your Zipped HTML Document Or E-book file was created by a newer Calibre than what you have installed.

Tip: If you right-click on your HTMLZ file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Regardless, most of the HTMLZ file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Calibre installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening HTMLZs

Errors opening Zipped HTML Document Or E-book files can still occur even with the latest Calibre software installed on your computer. If you are still having problems opening HTMLZ files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:

• HTMLZ file references in the Windows Registry are broken
• Accidental deletion of the description of the HTMLZ file in the Windows registry
• Corrupt install of Calibre or other HTMLZ-related program
• Something has caused file corruption of your HTMLZ
• The HTMLZ is infected with a virus
• HTMLZ-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
• Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Zipped HTML Document Or E-book file successfully
