ICAL File Complications
Troubles Opening ICAL Files
Microsoft Outlook is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open ICAL Files" when trying to open your ICAL. Customarily, this means that Microsoft Outlook is not installed on %%os%%. The typical path of opening your ICAL with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your ICAL, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Outlook
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a iCalendar File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Outlook installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your iCalendar File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Outlook than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your ICAL file and clicking "Properties".
Primarily, problems experienced when opening ICAL files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Outlook installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening ICALs
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Outlook will resolve your issue. If you are continuing to have errors with loading ICAL files, other external issues might be to blame. Issues that aren't software-related:
- ICAL file type Registry entries are wrong
- The ICAL file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a ICAL-associated program (eg. Microsoft Outlook)
- The ICAL itself is corrupted
- Your ICAL has adversely impacted by malware
- Drivers associated with ICAL software need to be updated
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open iCalendar File files
