Understanding IMG Issues
Common Problems Opening IMG Files
IsoBuster Not Present
When trying to open your IMG file, you get the error "Can't Open IMG File Type". Customarily, this means that IsoBuster is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your IMG with IsoBuster, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When another IMG application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Obsolete Version of IsoBuster
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Disk Image Data File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Visit the Smart Projects website to download (or purchase) the latest version of IsoBuster. This problem is predominately due to having a Disk Image Data File file version that was created by a newer version of IsoBuster than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Right-clicking on your IMG, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening IMG files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other Causes of IMG File Opening Problems
Although you might already have IsoBuster or another IMG-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Disk Image Data File files. If you're still experiencing problems opening IMG files, there could be other computer problems. Problems unrelated to software:
- Invalid IMG file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Accidental deletion of the description of the IMG file in the Windows registry
- IsoBuster or another IMG application experienced a flawed installation
- Your IMG file is corrupted (issues with your Disk Image Data File file itself)
- The IMG is infected with a virus
- Device drivers for IMG-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your Disk Image Data File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
