Issues Opening INF Files

Missing Pro/ENGINEER

Double-clicking your INF file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open INF File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Pro/ENGINEER for %%os%% installed on your computer. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: When another INF application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Wrong Version of Pro/ENGINEER is Installed

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Pro/ENGINEER Temporary file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Installing the latest version of Pro/ENGINEER from PTC is recommended. This problem is predominately due to having a Pro/ENGINEER Temporary file version that was created by a newer version of Pro/ENGINEER than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Investigate your INF file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening INF files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Other INF File Opening Causes

Assuming you have the right Pro/ENGINEER version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening INF files. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening INF files. These issues include:

  • Windows Registry INF file paths that are incorrect
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the INF file in the Windows registry
  • Pro/ENGINEER or another INF application experienced a flawed installation
  • The INF itself is corrupted
  • Your INF has adversely impacted by malware
  • Device drivers for INF-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your Pro/ENGINEER Temporary file
