ION File Complications
Issues Opening ION Files
Missing Microsoft Notepad
If you attempt to load your ION file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open ION Files". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Notepad is not installed on %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your ION because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your ION file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Notepad
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a File Description File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Notepad from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your File Description File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Notepad than you have on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of ION file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Regardless, most of the ION file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Notepad installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading ION Files
Although you might already have Microsoft Notepad or another ION-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening File Description File files. If you're still experiencing problems opening ION files, there could be other computer problems. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Windows Registry ION file paths that are incorrect
- Deletion of the ION file description from the Registry by mistake
- Partial installation of Microsoft Notepad that did not fully complete
- Your ION can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Your ION has adversely impacted by malware
- Device drivers for ION-related hardware are out-of-date
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the File Description File format
