Sources of JPS Problems

Issues Opening JPS Files

Akeeba eXtract Wizard is Not Installed

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open JPS Files" when trying to open your JPS. Customarily, this means that Akeeba eXtract Wizard is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your JPS with Akeeba eXtract Wizard, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: Another JPS-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Outdated Akeeba eXtract Wizard

It is possible that your version of Akeeba eXtract Wizard isn't able to open your Akeeba Backup Archive file due to incompatibility. Download the latest Akeeba eXtract Wizard version from the Open Source website to ensure you have the correct one installed. The primary cause of this problem is that your Akeeba Backup Archive file was created by a different (newer) version of Akeeba eXtract Wizard than what's installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of JPS file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Regardless, most of the JPS file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Akeeba eXtract Wizard installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening JPSs

Although you might already have Akeeba eXtract Wizard or another JPS-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Akeeba Backup Archive files. If you are still having problems opening JPS files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • File references in the Windows Registry for JPS are wrong
  • Corruption of the JPS file description inside the Registry
  • Corrupt install of Akeeba eXtract Wizard or other JPS-related program
  • Your JPS can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Your JPS has adversely impacted by malware
