KDB Troubleshooting

Common KDB Opening Problems

KeePass Password Safe Removed

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open KDB Files" when trying to open your KDB. Customarily, this means that KeePass Password Safe is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your KDB with KeePass Password Safe, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens KDB files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Outdated KeePass Password Safe

Sometimes your installed version of KeePass Password Safe won't support your KeePass Database File file. Installing the latest version of KeePass Password Safe from Open Source is recommended. This problem is predominately due to having a KeePass Database File file version that was created by a newer version of KeePass Password Safe than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Investigate your KDB file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Summary: Not having the right KeePass Password Safe version on your computer can cause problems opening KDB files.

Other KDB File Issues

Assuming you have the right KeePass Password Safe version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening KDB files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening KDBs. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Windows Registry KDB file paths that are incorrect
  • Deletion of the KDB file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Partial installation of KeePass Password Safe that did not fully complete
  • Your KDB can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Your KDB is infected with malware
  • Device drivers for KDB-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your KeePass Database File file
