Troubleshooting Problems Opening KDS Files
Issues Opening KDS Files
Microsoft Notepad is Not Installed
If you attempt to load your KDS file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open KDS Files". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Notepad for %%os%% installed on your computer. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: Another KDS-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Microsoft Notepad Requires Update
In other instances, your KD Player Skin File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Notepad. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Notepad installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your KD Player Skin File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Notepad than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of KDS file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Conclusion: The majority of KDS file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Notepad version installed.
Other KDS File Issues
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Notepad will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening KDS files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Issues that aren't software-related:
- KDS file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Deletion of the KDS file description from the Registry by mistake
- Partial installation of Microsoft Notepad that did not fully complete
- KDS file corruption
- Malware-tainted KDS file can't be opened
- Device drivers for KDS-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your KD Player Skin File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
