Troubleshoot KS Files

Common KS Opening Problems

MIC2 Not Present

Double-clicking your KS file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open KS File". If so, it typically means that you don't have MIC2 installed for %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your KS because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your KS, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Obsolete Version of MIC2

It is possible that your version of MIC2 isn't able to open your Kickstart File file due to incompatibility. If you do not have the proper version MIC2 (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Right-clicking on your KS, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening KS files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Additional KS Opening Issues

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of MIC2 will resolve your issue. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening KS files. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • Windows Registry KS file paths that are incorrect
  • Corruption of the KS file description inside the Registry
  • Corrupt install of MIC2 or other KS-related program
  • The KS itself is corrupted
  • The KS is infected with a virus
  • KS-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your Kickstart File file
