Troubleshooting Problems Opening LNX Files

Troubles Opening LNX Files

VICE Not Present

If you attempt to load your LNX file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open LNX Files". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have VICE for %%os%% installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the LNX file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: When another LNX application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

VICE Requires Update

Your Commodore 64 Lynx Archive file is incompatible with VICE because you might have the wrong version installed. If you do not have the proper version VICE (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This issue mainly occurs when your Commodore 64 Lynx Archive file was created by a newer version of VICE than you have on your PC.

Tip: Investigate your LNX file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Primarily, problems experienced when opening LNX files are due to having the incorrect version of VICE installed on your computer.

Other Causes of LNX File Opening Problems

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of VICE will resolve your issue. If you are continuing to have errors with loading LNX files, other external issues might be to blame. Additional factors include:

  • LNX file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the LNX file in the Windows registry
  • Partial installation of VICE that did not fully complete
  • LNX file corruption
  • LNX file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • Hardware associated with LNX has outdated drivers
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your Commodore 64 Lynx Archive file
