Sources of LYX Problems
Troubles Opening LYX Files
XWE is Not Installed
You attempt to load your LYX file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The LYX File Extension". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because XWE isn't installed on your PC. The OS won't know what to do with your LYX file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your LYX file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Outdated XWE
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of XWE installed that's incompatible with your XWE File type. Installing the latest version of XWE from Open Source is recommended. Your XWE File file was probably created by a newer release of XWE than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of LYX file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening LYX files are due to having the wrong version of XWE installed.
Other LYX File Issues
Although you might already have XWE or another LYX-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening XWE File files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading LYX files, other external issues might be to blame. Issues that aren't software-related:
- File references in the Windows Registry for LYX are wrong
- The LYX file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a LYX-associated program (eg. XWE)
- File corruption affecting your LYX file
- LYX file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Hardware related to LYXs has device driver corruption
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open XWE File files
