Troubleshoot M4 Files

Frequent M4 Opening Issues

Missing MacroMates TextMate

Double-clicking your M4 file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open M4 File". If so, it typically means that you don't have MacroMates TextMate installed for %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your M4 because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: Another M4-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

MacroMates TextMate is Out-of-Date

Your Macro Processor Library file is incompatible with MacroMates TextMate because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of MacroMates TextMate installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Most of the time your Macro Processor Library file was created by a newer MacroMates TextMate than what you have installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of M4 file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Regardless, most of the M4 file opening problems relate to not having the right version of MacroMates TextMate installed.

Associated Difficulties Loading M4 Files

Errors opening Macro Processor Library files can still occur even with the latest MacroMates TextMate software installed on your computer. If you are still having problems opening M4 files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Additional factors include:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for M4
  • Deletion of the M4 file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the M4 format
  • Your M4 can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your M4
  • Device drivers for M4-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your Macro Processor Library file
