Troubleshoot MFD Files

Common MFD Opening Problems

MusicFinderView is Not Installed

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open MFD Files" when trying to open your MFD. Usually, this is because you do not have MusicFinderView for %%os%% installed. The OS won't know what to do with your MFD file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: When another MFD application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Obsolete Version of MusicFinderView

Sometimes your installed version of MusicFinderView won't support your Music Finder Database file. If you've got the wrong version of MusicFinderView installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your Music Finder Database file was created by a newer version of MusicFinderView than you have on your PC.

Tip: If you right-click on your MFD file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Primarily, problems experienced when opening MFD files are due to having the incorrect version of MusicFinderView installed on your computer.

More Causes of Problems Opening MFDs

You can still experience errors opening MFD files even with the latest version of MusicFinderView installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening MFDs. Other contributing causes:

  • Invalid MFD file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry MFD description
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the MFD format
  • Your MFD file is corrupted (issues with your Music Finder Database file itself)
  • MFD file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • Hardware related to MFDs has device driver corruption
  • Windows cannot load your Music Finder Database file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
