Sources of MFS Problems

Common Problems Opening MFS Files

MetFS Removed

You attempt to load your MFS file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The MFS File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have MetFS installed for %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your MFS with MetFS, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you don't have MetFS installed, and you know of another program to open your MFS file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Obsolete Version of MetFS

Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of MetFS installed that's incompatible with your MetFS Encrypted File System type. If you do not have the proper version MetFS (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your MetFS Encrypted File System file was created by a different (newer) version of MetFS than what's installed.

Tip: If you right-click on your MFS file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening MFS files are due to having the wrong version of MetFS installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening MFSs

Even with the correct version of MetFS installed, you can still experience difficulties opening MFSs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening MFS files. Other contributing causes:

  • Windows Registry MFS file paths that are incorrect
  • Corruption of the MFS file description inside the Registry
  • Partial installation of MetFS that did not fully complete
  • Something has caused file corruption of your MFS
  • Malware-tainted MFS file can't be opened
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your MFS file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Windows cannot load your MetFS Encrypted File System file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
