MOT File Summary

Our most recent information indicates that MOT files are associated with three unique file types (the most prevalent being the LightWave Motion File format) and can be viewed primarily with LightWave 3D, including three other known software applications (listed below). The majority of MOT files are considered 3D Image Files, but they can also be System Files or Data Files.

Troubleshoot MOT Files

Troubles Opening MOT Files

LightWave 3D Isn't There

If you attempt to load your MOT file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open MOT Files". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because LightWave 3D isn't installed on your PC. The OS won't know what to do with your MOT file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: Another MOT-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

LightWave 3D is Out-of-Date

In other instances, your LightWave Motion File file version may not be supported by your version of LightWave 3D. Installing the latest version of LightWave 3D from NewTek is recommended. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Right-clicking on your MOT, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: Not having the right LightWave 3D version on your computer can cause problems opening MOT files.

Other MOT File Issues

Although you might already have LightWave 3D or another MOT-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening LightWave Motion File files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening MOTs. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • MOT file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry MOT description
  • Corrupt install of LightWave 3D or other MOT-related program
  • MOT file corruption
  • Malware-tainted MOT file can't be opened
  • Drivers associated with MOT software need to be updated
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open LightWave Motion File files

Poll: How many different computer files (eg. documents, videos, audio) do you typically view or edit on a daily basis?
