Understanding MSCR Issues

Common Problems Opening MSCR Files

ServiceMon Removed

You attempt to load your MSCR file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The MSCR File Extension". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have ServiceMon for %%os%% installed on your computer. The OS won't know what to do with your MSCR file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you don't have ServiceMon installed, and you know of another program to open your MSCR file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Outdated ServiceMon

Your ServiceMon Script file is incompatible with ServiceMon because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of ServiceMon installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Most of the time your ServiceMon Script file was created by a newer ServiceMon than what you have installed.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the MSCR file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Conclusion: The majority of MSCR file opening issues are due to not having the correct ServiceMon version installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening MSCRs

Assuming you have the right ServiceMon version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening MSCR files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening MSCRs. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for MSCR are wrong
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry MSCR description
  • Partial installation of ServiceMon that did not fully complete
  • Your MSCR can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your MSCR
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your MSCR file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the ServiceMon Script format
