Sources of OPUS Problems

Typical OPUS Opening Challenges

Microsoft Windows Media Player Isn't There

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open OPUS Files" when trying to open your OPUS. Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Windows Media Player for %%os%% installed. The OS won't know what to do with your OPUS file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens OPUS files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Incorrect Microsoft Windows Media Player Version

Your Opus Audio File file is incompatible with Microsoft Windows Media Player because you might have the wrong version installed. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Windows Media Player if you don't have the right version. Most of the time your Opus Audio File file was created by a newer Microsoft Windows Media Player than what you have installed.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your OPUS file and clicking "Properties".

Regardless, most of the OPUS file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Windows Media Player installed.

Other Causes of OPUS File Opening Problems

Although you might already have Microsoft Windows Media Player or another OPUS-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Opus Audio File files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading OPUS files, other external issues might be to blame. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • Invalid OPUS file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Corruption of the OPUS file description inside the Registry
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the OPUS format
  • The OPUS itself is corrupted
  • Your OPUS has adversely impacted by malware
  • Hardware related to OPUSs has device driver corruption
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Opus Audio File files
