Troubleshooting Problems Opening P7 Files

Common P7 Opening Problems

OpenSSL Disappeared

When you double-click your P7 file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have OpenSSL for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the P7 file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your P7, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Incorrect OpenSSL Version

Your PKCS #7 Digital Certificate File file is incompatible with OpenSSL because you might have the wrong version installed. If you do not have the proper version OpenSSL (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Most of the time your PKCS #7 Digital Certificate File file was created by a newer OpenSSL than what you have installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of P7 file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening P7 files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Other P7 File Issues

Errors opening PKCS #7 Digital Certificate File files can still occur even with the latest OpenSSL software installed on your computer. Other P7 opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Other contributing causes:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for P7 are wrong
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the P7 file in the Windows registry
  • OpenSSL or another P7 application experienced a flawed installation
  • Your P7 can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Your P7 has adversely impacted by malware
  • Drivers associated with P7 software need to be updated
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the PKCS #7 Digital Certificate File file
