Troubleshoot PAM Files

Frequent PAM Opening Issues

Adobe Photoshop Isn't There

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open PAM Files" when trying to open your PAM. If so, it typically means that you don't have Adobe Photoshop installed for %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the PAM file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: When another PAM application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Incorrect Adobe Photoshop Version

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Portable Arbitrary Map file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Installing the latest version of Adobe Photoshop from Adobe Systems Incorporated is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your Portable Arbitrary Map file was created by a newer version of Adobe Photoshop than you have on your PC.

Tip: Right-clicking on your PAM, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: Not having the right Adobe Photoshop version on your computer can cause problems opening PAM files.

Additional PAM Opening Issues

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Adobe Photoshop will resolve your issue. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening PAMs. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • PAM file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Deletion of the PAM file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Adobe Photoshop or another PAM application experienced a flawed installation
  • File corruption affecting your PAM file
  • Your PAM has adversely impacted by malware
  • Hardware associated with PAM has outdated drivers
  • Windows cannot load your Portable Arbitrary Map file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
